Montessori

“Education is a natural process carried out by the child and is not acquired by listening to words but by experiences in the environment.”

Maria Montessori

Developed by Italian Doctor, Maria Montessori, 1870-1952, Montessori is the name of a teaching method, an approach to early education that focuses on the immense capacity of children to absorb information when given the freedom and independence to learn at their own pace.

In 1896 Maria Montessori became the first woman in Italy to graduate from Medical School. Specialising in paediatrics, Montessori used observations to determine the needs of children in asylums, and helped many children regarded as ‘unteachable’ to pass state exams, using her teaching method. Following this success, Montessori opened her first school in 1907, ‘Casi dei Bambini’ (Italian for ‘Children’s House’) in the slums of Rome.
